Middle Tennessee is heading into its coldest stretch of the fall, with widespread frost and freeze risk for gardens and outdoor plants from Saturday morning through early next week.

The National Weather Service Forecast Office in Nashville was showing Frost Advisory and Freeze Watch products Friday afternoon and reminded residents that morning lows will drop into the 30s starting Saturday. The office said people may need to protect sensitive outdoor vegetation beginning Friday night.

What to expect through Monday

Local forecasts (WSMV and WKRN) call Friday a cooler day with highs in the upper 50s to mid 60s under partly cloudy skies and a northwest breeze. Temperatures fall through the 40s Friday evening, with patchy frost possible by early Saturday morning, especially away from the urban core and on the Cumberland Plateau.

Saturday morning looks sunny and chilly, with Nashville-area lows near the upper 30s and frost in many spots. Afternoon highs settle in the 50s to near 60. Sunday and Monday mornings look colder still: widespread frost is expected, with a light freeze possible along the Cumberland Plateau and in the coldest valleys. WKRN said some spots east of U.S. Highway 231 could see temperatures in the 20s, where a freeze is more likely.

NWS point forecasts Friday morning put Nashville around 63/37 Friday into Saturday morning, then about 59/34 Saturday into Sunday. Nearby cities including Murfreesboro, Clarksville and Columbia show similar mid-30s overnight readings.

Plant and travel tips

Cover tender plants, move potted plants indoors, and bring in plant frost cloth or old sheets before dusk Friday. Clear windshields carefully Saturday morning and leave extra following distance if bridges or shaded stretches get slick.

The stretch stays mostly dry. Aside from a slight chance of a sprinkle Friday in spots northeast of Nashville, NWS and local TV shops expect little rain for several days as severe-to-extreme drought continues across much of Middle Tennessee.
